ABOUT NIKAU LODGE
YOUR HOSTS

After travelling extensively, Mick and Karen, originally from the North of England, settled in New Zealand to marry and raise their 2 children. They took over Nikau Lodge in November 2020, located in what they consider a very special place, where the mountains meet the sea.... Kaikoura.

They enjoy meeting guests and exchanging travel stories over breakfast. They, (and Jazz the dog) look forward to welcoming you to Nikau Lodge.
HISTORY
Known as Old Maud Foster’s place after the original owner, Nikau Lodge was built in 1925. Upstairs was purpose built as accommodation in 1996. The glow of native Rimu and Matai timber is everywhere, and the house has a cosy homely feeling.

OVERVIEW
Nikau Lodge has 5 rooms available, all with ensuite bathrooms, tea & coffee facilities and stunning views of the Kaikoura landscape. We offer a range of cooked breakfast options for guests to enjoy in the morning against a backdrop of stunning scenery. With spectacular views from mountain ranges to vast oceans, this place has it all!
THE NIKAU PALM
Nikau Lodge is named after the Nikau Palm that grows in our garden, this tall, slender and graceful tree with its sensual bulbous curves leading into a spreading latticework of branches is the only native palm in New Zealand. The Nikau is the southern-most palm in the world.
It is easy to recognise in the bush with its circular trunk, ringed with evenly spaced scars from fallen leaves which are up to 3 metres in length and at their base circle the trunk completely. In Spring it sprouts large clusters of mauve flowers which burst from the base of the lowest branch. Initially this is sticky and sweet and attracts insects, in particular bees before it develops to the next stage of producing deep red berries. The Nikau can grow to 15 metres in height. It thrives in sheltered positions and can be found in coastal and warmer inland forests of the North Island and some parts of the South Island.
